Paying it forward: App State professor creates scholarship for STEM-focused first-generation students

First-generation college students in Appalachian’s Reich College of Education (RCOE) are benefiting from the pay-it-forward efforts of professor Dr. Chrystal Dean and her late husband. The pair created the Dean Family First Generation Teacher Education Scholarship, which supports first-generation RCOE students focused on STEM education.
Former App State Dean of University Libraries Dane Ward leaves legacy of ALS advocacy

ALS advocate Dr. Dane M. Ward, former dean of university libraries at Appalachian, served as an ALS Research Ambassador and authored editorials about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in higher education publications. He passed away from the disease July 5.

Appalachian English majors Jay Phillips and Victoria Goff have been named winner and runner-up, respectively, of the university’s Truman Capote Literary Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing in poetry for 2020–21. As the winner, Phillips was awarded a $3,649 scholarship.
2 App State graduate students among 41 selectees for national counseling fellowship

Jessie Butler and Fiona Abrams — both graduate students in Appalachian’s clinical mental health counseling program — are among 41 master’s-level students chosen nationally for the 2020–21 NBCC Minority Fellowship Program for Addictions Counselors. Each will receive $15,000 in funding, along with educational support.
App State students awarded record number of Gilman Scholarships for 2021 study abroad

The six Gilman Scholars are the most Appalachian students to be recognized in a single Gilman award cycle. Each will receive up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad during 2021, with additional funding available for the study of critical languages overseas.
AppalCART and App State awarded $1M-plus grant for electric bus

A collaboration between AppalCART and Appalachian State University has secured more than $1 million in grant funding to be used toward the purchase of an electric bus and charging station for AppalCART. The funding was awarded through the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
Continued federal funding supports App State interns in providing behavioral health services for rural populations

Thanks to continued federal funding, marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling interns at Appalachian are helping to increase the availability of culturally sensitive behavioral health services for residents of Northwestern North Carolina. The four-year project has received $1.75 million-plus in support.
2 App State students receive awards for creative poetry, prose on life amid COVID-19

Appalachian senior Abigail Miles and alumna Barclay Ann Blankenship ’20 are the recipients of Appalachian’s inaugural David Hodgin English Award. They will each receive a $350 scholarship and their creative works will be published in Appalachian’s literary journal, Cold Mountain Review.
App State’s NRLP awarded $1.1M-plus in grant funding for Payne Branch restoration project

Thanks to a second awarded grant, Appalachian’s New River Light and Power has received more than $1.1 million to complete an environmental restoration project at the site of the Payne Branch dam on New River. The work will begin the week of July 20.

Appalachian art professor Dr. Mira Rai Waits has been named a 2020 American Council of Learned Societies Fellow for her book project “Colonial Carcerality: The Birth of the Modern Prison in India,” which explores the spatial history of British colonial prisons in India.

Appalachian’s Dr. Jaewon Oh has collaborated with members of Arizona State University’s Photovoltaic Reliability Laboratory to analyze the soiling loss — or power loss due to dirt, dust and other particles — of six PV power plants across the U.S., including one in North Carolina.
App State sets new record for Fulbright U.S. Student grant awardees in 2020–21
