Nancy and Neil Schaffel and the Murar Foundation have made a $1 million matching gift to the endowment for Appalachian State University’s An Appalachian Summer Festival. The gift will support the festival’s music, dance, theater, film and visual arts programming.

App State alumnus and former NFL head coach Steve Wilks ’92 and his wife have made a gift to the university’s Keep Climbing initiative that includes establishing the Steve and Marcia Wilks Post-Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship. The yearly scholarship will support one student-athlete from an underrepresented population who is pursuing a graduate degree at App State.
Grant-funded studies by App State analyze COVID-19’s economic impact on Northwestern NC

App State was awarded a nearly $98,000 grant to analyze COVID-19’s total economic impact on the Northwestern NC region. In April alone, the region lost an estimated $52.4 million in gross regional product due to COVID-related restaurant and bar closures, according to preliminary reports.
Alumna and sons commit $1M toward App State basketball practice facility

App State alumna Missy Harrill ’93 and her sons, Jay Harrill and Brad Harrill, have made a $1 million commitment in support of App State basketball. The gift will fund improvements to the university’s Quinn Recreation Center, to be re-named the Mark E. Harrill Basketball Practice Facility in honor of Harrill’s husband.
App State funded to study rare bats along Blue Ridge Parkway area, investigate disease

Dr. Mark Spond, App State’s liaison to the National Park Service (NPS), was awarded NPS funding to conduct studies of bats along North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway — data from which will help expand NPS knowledge of the area’s rare bat species and those affected by white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fatal fungal disease.
