App State’s Dr. Eric Karchmer — a 2020–21 Fulbright awardee — has embarked on a Fulbright expedition to Taiwan, where, for the next 10 months, he will research how Taiwanese families are using traditional Chinese healing practices to manage the health of their children. He is joined by his wife, App State’s Dr. Dana Powell, and their children.

App State seniors Chris Zaman, of Cary, and Myia Spivey of Rocky Mount, have each received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad — virtually or in person — in 2021. Spivey is planning to intern in Singapore this summer, and Zaman is slated to study abroad in Japan this fall.

Grant-funded studies by App State analyze COVID-19’s economic impact on Northwestern NC

App State funded to study rare bats along Blue Ridge Parkway area, investigate disease

Dr. Mark Spond, App State’s liaison to the National Park Service (NPS), was awarded NPS funding to conduct studies of bats along North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway — data from which will help expand NPS knowledge of the area’s rare bat species and those affected by white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fatal fungal disease.
