Appalachian State University has received a $5 million grant from The Leon Levine Foundation of Charlotte. In recognition of their generosity, Appalachian’s Board of Trustees in December approved naming the university’s newest facility — currently under construction — the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences. The building will house Appalachian’s Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS).
Appalachian police receive training to treat opioid overdoses with Narcan

Even though Appalachian State University has no significant problem with opioid overdoses, its University Police Department stands ready to help were such emergencies to occur. Members of the Appalachian police, with the support of Project Lazarus, were recently trained in the use of Narcan — an emergency medication used to treat opioid overdoses.

Appalachian State University Police announced last month that its officers are officially trained and equipped to administer the anti-overdose medication Naloxone. Naloxone counters the effects of opioids in the system and can be effective at bringing someone out of an overdose episode, according to University Police Chief Andy Stephenson.

N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein led the first of four collegiate council meetings within the UNC system to work with students on combating opioid addiction on college campuses. The meeting, held at Appalachian State University on Oct. 16, included representatives from Appalachian, Western Carolina University, UNC-Asheville, East Carolina University, N.C. State, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

North Carolina has a higher-than-average food insecurity rate — 16 percent, ranking it eighth among the United States for the number of people who lack access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In comparison, a total of 13 percent of Americans were considered food insecure between 2013-15, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service. When the Appalachian Community explores a social problem like this, it doesn’t “just talk.”
