    All incoming first-year students at Appalachian State University will receive a copy of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s novel “One Amazing Thing” during summer orientation as part of the university’s Common Reading Program for the 2017-18 academic year.

    Dancing the night away certainly paid off for children’s charities as the annual Dance Marathon at Appalachian State University raised $39,088.90 for two local nonprofits: Parent to Parent Family Support Network and Western Youth Network. Close to 200 students participated in the annual 15-hour event that took place Feb. 25 at Legends.

    The gala concert featured 10 works chosen by conference adjudicators, including “Tiny Potato on the Train,” by Assistant Professor of Dance Studies Cara Hagan, and “From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried,” which was choreographed by Juliet Irving, a junior dance studies and graphic design double major.

    Appalachian State University art and geology students are collaborating on a sculpture of a Triassic aetosaur based on a handful of pre-historic bones unearthed in North Carolina. The finished piece is expected to be placed in the Fred Webb Jr. Outdoor Geology Laboratory/Interactive Rock Garden alongside Rankin Science South in fall 2018.
