Approximately 4,000 Appalachian Community members gathered virtually to celebrate more than 1,700 graduates of App State’s Fall Class of 2020. The keynote speaker for the university’s Fall 2020 Commencement was alumnus and WBTV News anchor John Carter ’79.

App State’s Dr. Rebecca Payne Jordan is one of eight Literacy Fellows appointed by the University of North Carolina System. The fellows are charged with developing a detailed framework for literacy instruction in teacher preparation, to be adopted by all educator preparation programs in the System.

The Chancellor’s Scholarship — a four-year program of rigorous study that covers full institutional costs — is Appalachian’s oldest and most academically competitive merit-based scholarship. It is awarded to the highest achieving students who have earned entry into the university’s Honors College.

The three leaders — Lee Cope, Katharine Johnson and Travis Erickson — began their new roles in the Disco Student Learning Center this summer. Cope serves as the center’s executive director; Johnson serves as interim director of university tutorial services; and Erickson serves as director of auxiliary services.
Hendren named director of App State Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics

Dr. Christine Hendren began her new position as director of Appalachian’s Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics Aug. 3. She comes to Appalachian from Duke University, where she served as executive director of the school’s Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology.
