Business students make App State history with triple wins in global research challenge

Five App State business students made university history with triple wins in the 2021 Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge. In addition to state and regional titles, the students won the Americas Regional round — a first for App State — and advanced over nearly 1,000 teams to compete as a top five team in the challenge’s Global Final.
App State celebrates more than 3,600 Class of 2021 graduates

Chancellor Sheri Everts conferred degrees upon more than 3,600 Mountaineer graduates as part of App State’s Spring 2021 Commencement. The university held 13 in-person commencement ceremonies May 7–12 and offered a virtual conferral of degrees by Everts to allow for the greatest possible participation and maximize health and safety of all participants.

Shannon Campbell named Dean of App State’s College of Fine and Applied Arts

After a national search, Dr. Shannon Campbell has been named dean of App State’s College of Fine and Applied Arts effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Campbell has a successful record as a higher education administrator who mentored faculty, students and staff, managed diverse staffs and large complex budgets, and developed and implemented policies, operations and procedures at all university levels.
Dr. Caroline Smith named App State winner of 2021 UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award

Dr. Caroline Smith introduces real-world applications from her thermal physiology research to inspire her students to think critically and creatively. Smith is the 2021 recipient of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award for App State. Six other App State faculty were selected to receive campus-based awards.

App State Fulbrighter Dr. Suzanna Bräuer explores microbes’ impact on climate change

App State’s Dr. Suzanna Bräuer, professor of biology, has been awarded a 2020–21 Fulbright to research how methane-producing microorganisms known as archaea impact global climate change. Her Fulbright assignment takes her to Finland, where she is also teaching graduate courses at the University of Eastern Finland.
App State names inaugural BCBS of NC Endowed Professor in Public Health

After conducting a national search, App State has appointed Dr. Martie Thompson as its inaugural Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Endowed Professor in Public Health. Thompson, who comes to App State from Clemson University, will join the faculty in App State’s Beaver College of Health Sciences in August.
App State’s Paul Meggett named among NC’s top 100 African American attorneys for 2nd consecutive year

Dr. Sandie Gravett, professor of religious studies at App State, has received the 2020 Academic Freedom and Faculty Governance Award for her work as an advocate for App State’s students, faculty and administrators. The award is conferred by the university’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).
