    App State's Team Sunergy wins big in US solar racing challenge — No. 1 in Cruiser Class

    App State’s solar vehicle team, Team Sunergy, swept the 2021 American Solar Challenge — finishing in first place for multiple-occupant vehicles (MOV), winning all three stages of the race from Missouri to New Mexico and clocking a total of 964.8 miles.

    The North Carolina General Assembly appointed two members to App State’s Board of Trustees in June. The House of Representatives appointed James “Jamie” E. Harris ’84, and the Senate appointed Steven D. Wyatt ’83. Their appointments began July 1.

    Five App State business students made university history with triple wins in the 2021 Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge. In addition to state and regional titles, the students won the Americas Regional round — a first for App State — and advanced over nearly 1,000 teams to compete as a top five team in the challenge’s Global Final.

    Chancellor Sheri Everts conferred degrees upon more than 3,600 Mountaineer graduates as part of App State’s Spring 2021 Commencement. The university held 13 in-person commencement ceremonies May 7–12 and offered a virtual conferral of degrees by Everts to allow for the greatest possible participation and maximize health and safety of all participants.

    After a national search, Dr. Shannon Campbell has been named dean of App State’s College of Fine and Applied Arts effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Campbell has a successful record as a higher education administrator who mentored faculty, students and staff, managed diverse staffs and large complex budgets, and developed and implemented policies, operations and procedures at all university levels.

    The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has ranked App State No. 1 in its “Top 50 Alma Maters by Total Number of NBCTs” list for the fifth consecutive year. App State leads the nation for the number of National Board Certified Teachers — 2,178.
