App State’s CS4ALL Program expands access to computer science education for rural Appalachian students

CS4ALL — a professional development program offered by App State — is designed to expand access to and diversify computer science education for students at rural high schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. South Arts grant supports virtual App State residency for Appalachian, Latino artists

App State’s Dr. Gregory Perreault, assistant professor of multimedia journalism, has been awarded a 2020–21 Fulbright to teach and perform research at Austria’s University of Vienna this spring and summer. Through his research project, he is comparing the differences in journalistic values and practices between Austrian digital journalists and their American counterparts.
App State higher education professor helps create, co-directs Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges

App State’s Dr. Andrew Koricich is one of four co-founders and co-directors of the Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges — a grant-funded initiative aimed at increasing appreciation for and understanding of U.S. regional, or rural-serving, colleges and their contributions. To date, the project has received more than half-million dollars in support.
App Builds a Home is raising funds and building walls

App State’s Dr. Suzanna Bräuer, professor of biology, has been awarded a 2020–21 Fulbright to research how methane-producing microorganisms known as archaea impact global climate change. Her Fulbright assignment takes her to Finland, where she is also teaching graduate courses at the University of Eastern Finland.

App State’s Dr. Eric Karchmer — a 2020–21 Fulbright awardee — has embarked on a Fulbright expedition to Taiwan, where, for the next 10 months, he will research how Taiwanese families are using traditional Chinese healing practices to manage the health of their children. He is joined by his wife, App State’s Dr. Dana Powell, and their children.

App State seniors Chris Zaman, of Cary, and Myia Spivey of Rocky Mount, have each received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad — virtually or in person — in 2021. Spivey is planning to intern in Singapore this summer, and Zaman is slated to study abroad in Japan this fall.
